An enthusiastic crowd filled the 7th Street Entry at First Avenue on Thursday night for Minneapolis-based band American Scarecrows CD release show to celebrate their second album Yesteryear. The 90 minute performance heavily favored their new material which features roots in country, rock and folk.
The show started with “The Peak” and ended with “Outskirts,” mirroring the opening and closing tracks on the new record. Sebastian Davin, Seth Davin’s older brother and former bandmate from Dropping Daylight, joined the band to provide piano, guitar, and backup vocals, with Seth noting it was the first time they had played on stage together in 5 years. Kevin Mayer, Seth’s best friend and former member of American Scarecrows, also came on stage to reprise two songs from the first record. The songs heavily reference the band’s home state, with the audience joining in during “North Country” for a round of M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I.
Towards the end of the night, the band slowed down for the contemplative β300 Flowers.β Seth challenged the crowd before starting the song, βCan we all just be here, in this moment for a bit? Just right here, together. Not on your phone, Facebook, just in this moment.β A piano solo by Sebastian continued to close the set, with Seth returning for an acoustic solo before being joined by the rest of the band for the last two songs. The show was the perfect preview for the crowd of people anxious to get their hands on the latest release, Yesteryear, which was sold at the show prior to the official release on Tuesday, June 24.
